Gone are the days of waking up with a cup of coffee and opening up the morning newspaper.
As the times have changed rapidly over the last several decades, so have the means and methods of brands attempting to reach consumers new and old. It's a never-ending shift; print turns into radio, radio turns into TV, Tv has turned into smartphones and tablets… and who knows what will come next?
What we do know, is that it is ever-important to adapt along with the changing times. Just look at Blockbuster- a commonly referenced case study in stubbornness and refusal to move along with ever-present trends.
When looking at how to approach marketing and advertising, it is important to stretch your content to net the widest range of eyeballs and potential consumers possible. How is this achieved? Not by sticking with the same medium forever, but by putting your content right in front of consumer's noses- and most users' noses are in front of their phones.
According to a recent poll conducted by the Pew Research Center, 86% of U.S. adults get their news and content/information from their smartphones, computers, and tablets. While 30 years ago it may have been a great decision to focus almost all advertising dollars in newspaper, the reality is that, while it does indeed still reach people, only 30% of those U.S. adults surveyed still get their news and content from print publications.
This does not necessarily mean that digital media is the end-all, be-all. Nor does it mean that print advertising has gone the way of the dodo. The most important thing a successful marketer can do, is figure out where the proper pieces fit best when developing an advertising scheme, whether it be differing amounts of spend and content budgeted and planned towards print, radio, television, or digital media.
